Get Real Tax and Contract Laws Inside ChatGPT and Claude

A contract question at 9 pm usually means guessing or waiting on an attorney. One free add-on lets Claude or ChatGPT answer from the actual government page instead.

It's 9 at night, there's a statement of work waiting for your signature, and you have a nagging question about the non-compete clause in it. You want a straight answer before morning, without paying an attorney's billable hour just to learn what the state statute says.

Ask ChatGPT or Claude that question as they come out of the box and they often answer from memory. That memory can be out of date or for the wrong state, and you're the one signing on that answer.

A company called Firecrawl, which builds tools that let AI read the web, released a free government and legal index covering over 30 million government pages, from statutes to tax forms. Every answer quotes the exact page it came from.

Why standard AI chats get state law wrong

Take an Illinois garage door company bringing on an extra installer for the busy season. The owner needs to know whether that installer counts as an independent contractor. If the owner types that into a plain AI chat at lunch, they can get a confident answer built on another state's rules. Then the owner either guesses on the contract or loses an afternoon digging through the state code.

For that owner, I'd connect the chat they already use to the primary source, so it reads the government page before it answers. Firecrawl announced the index on X as a free add-on for exactly that.

What changes when you connect the government index

Illinois statute 820 ILCS 115/2 with the three-part independent contractor test on ilga.gov.

Once the index is connected, you can ask your chat the exact questions that come up while running the business:

How to turn it on in Claude or ChatGPT

Setup instructions for Claude and ChatGPT on firecrawl.dev.

There's no key to paste. You need a free account on the Firecrawl Alexandria government index page, which comes with a generous free tier.

In Claude, add the Firecrawl connector, then turn it on from the plus menu inside your chat. In ChatGPT, add the Firecrawl plugin and type @Firecrawl in your next question.

The caveat I'd give any owner: a quoted statute shows you the law, and your attorney or accountant tells you how it applies to your contract before you act on it.

Before you sign your next scope or statement of work, turn on the Firecrawl connector once in Claude or ChatGPT and run your first contract or tax question through it.

Questions owners ask

Why shouldn't I trust normal ChatGPT or Claude for state tax and contract questions?

Out of the box, Claude and ChatGPT often answer legal and tax questions from memory, which can be out of date or for the wrong state. That's a risk when you sign a contract or file taxes on the answer.

What is Firecrawl's government and legal index?

It's a free add-on for Claude and ChatGPT that searches over 30 million official government pages, including state statutes, FTC rules, and IRS tax forms. Every result quotes the government page it came from so you can see the actual law.

If you own a business or an independent consultant, you need to be using this resource for all your legal and tax-related business management needs. As someone who's running two fractional businesses, here's the free setting to turn on. When you ask Claude or ChatGPT a tax or contract question, it often answers from memory, which can be out of date or for the wrong state. And that matters a lot if you're someone who's writing scopes, signing statements of work, or filing taxes on that answer. So Firecrawl, this company that builds tools that lets AI read the web, released a free government and legal index that's over thirty million government pages, from statutes to tax forms, and every result quotes from that page where it came from. Hey, if you're new here, I'm Kevin. I break down what's happening in AI and how to actually build with it, so if that's your thing, hit follow. The best part is it's a free plugin, which is just an add-on for your ChatGPT or Claude LLM. You do need a free Firecrawl account, but there's no key to paste, and there's a really generous free tier. In Claude, add the Firecrawl connector, and then turn it on from the plus menu in the chat. In ChatGPT, add the Firecrawl plugin and mention @Firecrawl in your next question. Then ask it like a consultant. Ask for your state's test for whether you count as an independent contractor. And in Illinois, it'll bring back the actual statute with the three-part test from the Illinois General Assembly site. Ask about a non-compete clause in a client's contract, and it tells you the FTC says its non-compete rule is not in effect, quoting ftc.gov. And ask where the IRS instructions for your Form 1040 are, and it finds them for you. So all you have to do is turn on this Firecrawl resource once, and every tax or contract answer comes back with the actual law attached.
